10 Best Tweaks To Speed Up and Boost Your Computer

Everyone hates rebooting their computer. Even if it takes less than two minutes, it seems like it's taking hours. So today we have 10 Awesome Ways to Speed Up Your PC's Boot Time. These great, easy to perform and well-supported tips as can surely help you get a faster-booting machine. Check them out!

10. Tweak Your BIOS

When setting up your PC, your BIOS will be set up to make things easier for you, but after you are done with the procedure we can disable it. Holding 'DEL' key while your PC is starting up (or some other key your BIOS tells you to enter setup), will allow turning on the "Quick Boot" option and moving your hard disk to the top of the boot priority list. The tests your PC runs after turning on will be turned off by the Quick Boot, and your PC will be commanded by the boot priority tweak to not to look for CDs, thumb drives, or other media. This thing will get you booted into your OS a lot quickly. But please keep in mind that you would have to go back into the BIOS and change this again, whenever you are required to boot from CD.

9. Cleaning Up Programs that Launch at Startup

One of the most tested ways of speeding up your boot time is by keeping the unnecessary programs from starting up with your PC. Doing this is possible by running msconfig from the Start Menu's search box, and then heading over to the Startup tab. This list of apps will tell you the function of each app, so you can disable the ones you don't want to keep. Soluto is another great way of cleaning up these apps.

8. Delay Windows Services That Run at Startup

Disabling Services from msconfig can sometimes do more harm than good, so delaying certain startup services is a good idea. Your PC will boot quicker and then you can take care of the Services later.

7. Alter Your Boot Menu's Timeout Values

When you dual-boot your PC, your boot menu probably has a "timeout value". This is the time your PC waits for you to make a choice before it simply boots into the default operating system. On Windows, this time is usually 30 seconds, which is quite long. In order to alter this value simple head over to the msconfig and click on the BOOT.INI tab, then alter the number in the timeout box to a lower one. If you are using Linux, then you are most probably running the GRUB boot menu, and you can alter the timeout on that too.

6. Disable Unused Hardware

Your PC loads many drivers on start up, even those you don't use. Go to the Device Manager from the Start Menu's search box, and disable the ones you are using, for example, Bluetooth controllers, modems, and virtual Wi-Fi adapters etc. For disabling them, right-click the one you wish to disable and click "Disable". Make sure to disable the things you don't actually use, and to retain the ones you do.

5. Make Sure Your Antivirus Is Running and Up to Date

This one is quite obvious. Get a good antivirus and keep it up to date, and do a regular scan. It is a great precautionary measure as malware slows down the booting speed. Microsoft Security Essentials is a great antivirus; if you don't like it, you can obviously get the one you like the best.

4. Get Rid Of Any Unnecessary Fonts

Windows always loads fonts at startup, and this thing slows down the boot time. Windows 7 normally loads more than 200 fonts at startup; even more if you have installed Microsoft Office. Most of us rarely use all of these fonts, so you can always hide them for speeding up booting. Simply open the Fonts folder in Windows 7 from the Start Menu's search box, and uncheck those fonts you don't use, followed by a click on the "Hide" button in the toolbar. And you can always bring them back whenever you want!

3. Upgrade Your RAM

Getting more RAM always helps in speeding up your PC. RAM is not at all costly these days, so getting more RAM will not harm in you anyway. It will make system a bit more smoother and quicker.

2. Give Your PC a Static IP

After starting your PC, it spends quite some time in getting the IP address. You can simply do away with this process by providing your PC a static IP address that remains the same. This makes your network easier to handle (as each PC will always have the same IP address), and it will also make your booting process quicker.

1. Installing a Solid State Drive

A great way to ameliorate your PC is by installing a solid state drive. It has super-fast read times and can speed up your startup. They are quite expensive, and have own maintenance requirements, but still they are great for speeding up your PC and its booting time. The difference is very noticeable.

These things will definitely help in making your PC and its boot time faster. These are very well-known and trusted methods, so you should give them a try.

5 Amazing Firefox 8 Add-ons That Improve Browsing

Firefox was once the most famous and widely used browser but we saw its popularity evanescing slowly over the past few years, thanks to all the other browsers. Now that Firefox 8 is out, I think we should all give it another chance. It is obviously has its flaws, but all the other browsers out there aren't too perfect too.

So today we have a list of 5 great add-ons, which you can always use to get the best out of your Firefox 8. Check out the list!

5 Add-ons To Turn Firefox 8 Into An Amazing Browser

Mar Mod is a great add-on that will really enhance your Firefox 8. After you start using it, you feel the difference right away. Its menu has a “Restart” option, and a new “Addons” menu too that allows accessing individual add-ons quickly and easily. It also boasts an online translator, simply select your language and translate any text you wish only by two clicks. It also has many other awesome features too, such as the ability to navigate to the context menu, to change your icon set and control favicons, to add download file size. It also provides backups too. It is definitely a must have add-on.

If you often need to restart Firefox then get this add-on. This one is a light add-on that adds a great new feature, and that is the option to restart. It is not only added to the Firefox menu, but you are also given the ability to set a hotkey. In short, restarting Firefox without even using the mouse is now possible. This feature can prove to be really helpful if you tend to install and uninstall many add-ons. The best part is that it doesn’t require a restart itself!

This add-on allows creating custom speed-dial page. You can put sites that you visit often and then use them as clickable bookmarks complete with folders. Adding a Google search widget to your page is also possible. This add-on lets you add thumbnails of the website, adding a custom photo to the thumbnail to make icons is also possible. Folders are the links to other “Desktops” and you can create more custom widgets. This is a unique add-on but it has its flaws -- for instance, there is no way of naming your folders. But on the whole, Desktop is a useful add-on.

FindBar Tweak is a great add-on that makes searching webpages a breeze. Firefox’s native find option is not that good, so using this add-on is very logical, as it makes searching webpages a lot easier.

This add-on gives you the ability of tweaking the find bar to open and close on Ctrl+F. If you wish, moving it to the top of the page and changing the button layout is practicable. You can also set the options for how highlights should look like. Selecting colors, choosing if all the matching words should be highlighted or not, and adding a highlights grid to the scrollbar is possible. This tiny add-on completes the Firefox’s Find.

If you have a problem of opening too many tabs at the same time, then this is a must have add-on for you. It will take care of all the extra tabs, as you can define a maximum number of tabs that can be opened at a time. Then this add-on will automatically close the unused tabs. I know it sounds a bit disagreeable, but don't worry: It can be tweaked. You have the ability of setting specific options, for instance, you can determine the websites that should never be automatically closed and specify to never close tabs that you have not viewed yet. You can set it to number the tabs and classify your tabs according to the most recently viewed.

Conclusion:

Firefox 8 is actually quite good: Its loading times have been ameliorated,and it’s responsive. Good add-ons can enhance the user experience a lot and it can become really awesome.

A great Plugin, BackupBuddy WordPress Plugin v2.0.2 Download

BackupBuddy BackupBuddy WordPress Plugin v2.0.2 Download
Description:
Running on thousands of sites, BackupBuddy is an all-in-one solution for backups, restoration, and migration. Back up to your server, Amazon S3, a FTP/FTPS account, or an email. Use the backup with the Importing & Migrating script to quickly and easily restore your site on the same server or even migrate to a new server with a different domain and database. Whether you’re an end user or a developer, this plugin is sure to bring you peace of mind and added safety in the event of data loss. Our goal is to keep the backup, restoration, and migration processes easy, fast, and reliable.
* Does it backup everything?
Yes. It backs up the SQL database, plugins, files, themes, scripts, and everything else in the WordPress database and directories.
* Can I back up to Amazon S3 or other remote servers?
Yes. BackupBuddy supports backing up to your local server as well as remote locations such as the Amazon S3 cloud, FTP, FTPS, and email.
* Do I need to install WordPress on the destination server before importing?
No. BackupBuddy’s importer script, importbuddy.php, handles restoring you WordPress installation, files, database, and all settings. It also handles migrating the URL and other settings if you changed hosts.
* Does BackupBuddy do incremental backups?
This feature is in the works for an upcoming version of BackupBuddy.
* Does it take care of all the path changes?
Yes. It handles changing the URL, file paths, permalinks, etc.
* Is there a size limit?
There is no set limit. However, server configurations determine how much can be backed up. script timeout time, memory limits, CPU usage, and harddrive utilization all can have an influence on backup capabilities. BackupBuddy is meant to back up WordPress sites, not entire servers or vast amounts of data. Shared hosting usually allows for backing up sites 400-1500MB before server limitations prevent progression.
* Any server requirements?
At least PHP 5.0 is required. If you are using PHP4, almost all hosts allow free upgrades to 5. We recommend PHP 5.2 with command line ZIP or the ZipArchive class for optimum speed and functionality. BackupBuddy core functions automatically fall back to slower methods on systems not meeting recommendations including Windows, older PHP versions, and systems lacking ZIP functionality using the built in automatic compatibility mode. Not all features are available on pre-PHP 5.2 systems. Advanced options are available to help with compatibilities in poor hosting environments. Some advanced features may not be available in compatibility mode. For more information see our Detailed Server Requirements.
* Are there any hosts known to be incompatible?
BackupBuddy includes a multitude of debugging and compatibility options to help work around any server issues. DreamHost is currently the most problematic server environment though work-arounds are available in almost all cases. See our Host List for more information on reported issues with some hosts. Almost all hosting environments can be adapted to if a problem does occur.
* Is WordPress MU or Multisite functionality supported?
We do not officially support MU or multisite currently. However, it has been reported that in MU BackupBuddy can backup either the current site or all sites on the single WP installation and in WordPress 3.0’s multisite, it backs up the entire set of sites on the single WP installation.
* Are Windows servers supported?
Yes! However, BackupBuddy will fall back to the slower compatibility mode as described in the question above when running on a Windows server. Some advanced features may not be available in this mode.
